Rumours have been rife that Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma are headed for a divorce. While reports suggested that the divorce is finalised, their lawyer had said that the matter is still subjudice. Usuaully, for most divorce cases, the court gives time of six months to the couple to sort out their differences. However, as per the latest update, Justice Madhav Jamdar orderd the family court to speed up the process, considering the Indian cricketer’s commitments with the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The Bombay High Court has directed the Bandra Magistreate court to make a decision on Yuzvendra and Chahal’s divorce by March 20, Thursday. For those not in the know, Yuzvendra plays for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025 and the opening ceremony will take place on March 22. The court has ordered that the divorce procedure must speed up and be finalised before that. Chahal and Dhanashree subsequently filed a joint plea in the High Court, challenging the family court’s decision in Mumbai. Under Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act, a six-month cooling-off period is mandatory before granting a divorce decree.
But in this case, six month cooling period has been waived off. This is also because the couple was already living separately since two and a half years and are getting divorced through mutual consent.
The court’s order required Chahal to pay Rs 4.75 crore to Dhanashree. He had paid Rs 2.37 crore, the court said. The family court referenced a report from the marriage counsellor, which indicated that mediation efforts had only been partially complied with.
During the hearing, Justice Jamdar said that “this was a rare case where there were no respondents,” as both Chahal and Verma had jointly filed the petition.
Meanwhile, rumours were rife that Dhanashree has asked for an alimony of Rs 60 crore but her family denied these reports and said, “We are deeply outraged by the baseless claims being circulated about the alimony figure. Let me be absolutely clearno such amount has ever been asked, demanded, or even offered. There is no truth to these rumours whatsoever.”
