K-pop sensation Jennie from Blackpink has found herself at the centre of a heated social media debate after netizens pointed out striking similarities between her latest track, Like Jennie, and the Rani Intro Theme from the Bollywood film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
The plagiarism accusations spread on social media, with fans expressing their shock over the similarities in the beats, hook, and melody of both tracks. The theme, composed by Pritam for Alia Bhatt’s character introduction in the Karan Johar film, has now become a focal point of discussion, with many questioning whether Jennie sampled the Bollywood hit song or if it was indeed plagiarised.
A netizen wrote, “I cannot believe Jennie is plagiarising Pritam, out of all. Bollywood out of all,” while another remarked, “Pritam getting copied was not on my bingo card.”
“Omg this sounds the same,” commented another.
However, some defended Jennie, arguing that Pritam himself has been accused of lifting melodies in the past. One user pointed out, “Pritam literally copied ‘Pehli Nazar Mein’ note for note without credit from a Korean song. He probably sampled this intro from another international song too, while Jennie will give proper sampling credits.”
Jennie was in the news on Monday, after her appearance at ‘The Jennifer Hudson Show’. The star, who made her acting debut in The Weeknd and Lilly Rose Depp’s web series The singer shared details of her upcoming solo album ‘Ruby’ and revealed that she didn’t have time to think about other projects while preparing for her solo album. She explained, “I definitely love watching movies so much. Every time I watch a new movie, I would be inspired by the character in the movie and I’m always thinking what would it be like if I played that character. I think about it a lot but to be honest, for the past year and a half, I’ve been so focused on being inspired for this album that I have no brain energy left to think about which character I want to play.”
Alia Bhatt, on the other hand, is currently working on her next film, ‘Love and War’ which will see her starring opposite husband Ranbir Kapoor and former co-star Vicky Kaushal
