Ashutosh Sharma was the hero last night for Delhi Capitals (DC) as his unbeaten blistering knock of 66 (31) helped his side snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The crowd at the ACA International Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam were treated to a run fest as LSG posted a formidable 209/8 in the first innings. They were cruising to victory as DC’s top order were back in the hut very cheaply; they were 7/3 and then 65/5 when Faf du Plessis was dismissed for 29 (18) in the 7th over.
However, Sharma, who came onto bat as an Impact Player, stayed true to the label as he stayed till the end and helped DC cross the line in a thriller with 3 balls to spare. His six over Shahbaz Ahmed’s head sealed the highest chase DC ever pulled off successfully in the IPL.
Let us take a look at the other stats from the exciting match at Vizag
Highest successful chase: 210 is the highest total DC has chased in the history of the IPL, bettering the 209 it knocked down against the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in 2017. Interestingly, this is only the second time DC has successfully chased a target of more than 200 in the IPL.
Margin of victory: DC’s one-wicket win against LSG was only the 5th time a team has won chasing by that margin in the history of the tournament. DC knocked off 18 runs after the fall of the 9th wicket, which is the most runs scored in these five instances.
Second-highest 1-wicket win: 210 is the second-highest successful chase for a team that had lost 9 wickets in T20 cricket. LSG holds the record for the highest-successful chase after losing 9 wickets, when they hit 213 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2023.
Improbable victory: At 65/5, DC needed a whopping 145 runs to win the game. By knocking off those runs, DC scored the most runs in the IPL after losing 5 wickets in a successful chase. The previous record was held by RCB, who hit 130 runs after losing 5 wickets against Gujarat Lions in 2016. RCB were in dire straits at 29/5 in their chase of 159.
Top knock: Ashutosh Sharma’s knock of 66 is one of the highest scores in the history of IPL while batting at No. 7 or lower. Only 4 other batters have scored more than Sharma and only one was in a successful chase. Dwayne Bravo holds that record when he scored 68 for Chennai Super Kings in their win against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in 2018.
Remarkable recovery: Last night’s victory for DC came in incredible circumstances as they recovered from 7/3 after 1.4 overs to reach the target of 210. There have been only 3 other instances where teams have recovered from worse positions to chase a game successfully, with Rajasthan Royals recording the poorest start at 3/3. This was in the second season of the IPL in 2009, held in South Africa, when RR beat Deccan Chargers chasing 142 at Gqeberha after losing Graeme Smith, Swapnil Asnodkar, and Naman Ojha – all dismissed for 0 – in the first 2 overs.
5-star Maximums: Nicholas Pooran’s four sixes in the 13th over signified the 5 times he has hit at least three maximums in an over. The other batters to have hit at least three sixes on 5 different occasions are Andre Russell, Will Jacks, Abhishek Sharma, and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
600+ Sixes: Sticking with Pooran, the explosive southpaw from the West Indies took his six-hitting tally in the T20 format to 606. He was on 599 sixes before the game began and he hit 7 huge sixes in his blistering knock of 75 (30). Only 3 other batters have more sixes in T20s, and all of them are from the Caribbean like Pooran – Chris Gayle (1056), Kieron Pollard (908) and Andre Russell (733).
The next IPL match is between Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
