Deb Mukherjee, a respected actor in Indian cinema and father of filmmaker Ayan Mukerji, passed away on 14 March 2025 at the age of 83 due to age-related health issues. His passing has deeply affected the film industry and his loved ones.
Deb’s funeral took place on 14 March 2025 at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Mumbai. Many Bollywood stars attended the ceremony to pay their last respects. Ranbir Kapoor, a close friend of Ayan Mukerji, was seen carrying the bier as a sign of respect.
The days following his passing saw many actors and filmmakers offering their condolences. Many well-known actors visited Ayan Mukerji’s home to offer their condolences. Rani Mukerji was seen arriving to support her cousin. Siddharth Malhotra and his wife, soon-to-be mum Kiara Advani, also visited to support Ayan during the difficult time. Saqib Saleem and Huma Qureshi were also seen arriving, showing the deep respect and affection people had for Deb Mukherjee.



Actress Kajol, his niece, had earlier visited Ayan Mukerji’s home to express her grief. She also shared an emotional Instagram post: “Grief is the price we pay for having loved deeply. It never goes away; we just learn to live with it”. She posted a throwback picture from a past Durga Puja, reminiscing about their tradition of taking photos together.
To honour Deb Mukherjee, a prayer meeting will take place on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Filmalaya Studio, Ceasar Road, Amboli, Andheri West, Mumbai.
Deb Mukherjee was part of the famous Mukherjee-Samarth family, which has strong roots in Bollywood. He was the father of director Ayan Mukerji, known for films such as ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, and ‘Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva’. His daughter, Sunita Gowariker, is married to filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker.
