Singer-turned-actress Lisa, a member of the globally renowned K-pop group BLACKPINK, is set to make history by becoming the first Korean artist to perform at the 97th Academy Awards.
The rapper was officially announced as a performer for Oscars. She will join the list of performers including American rapper Doja Cat and British singer-songwriter Raye. Buzz is that the trio will debut their collaboration, ‘Born Again‘, with its first live performance during the ceremony.
The musical lineup will also include performances by Oscar-nominated actresses Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the lead actresses of the musical ‘Wicked’, as well as rap icon Queen Latifah.
The Oscars, known for having their nominated songs from films performed on the big stage, will break away from tradition this year. The academy announced that the Best Original Song nominees will not be performed this year, making way for other musical acts. This makes Lisa’s performance at the Oscars a first of its kind. In a statement, the academy announced that the showstopping performances will be “celebrating the filmmaking community and some of its legends.”
The songs from Cynthia and Ariana’s ‘Wicked’ weren’t eligible for best song since, they hailed from the Broadway musical, hence did not qualify as original to the movie.
The 97th Academy Awards, is scheduled to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2.
Like the Grammys and other awards shows this year, the ceremony will be transformed by the fires and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has pledged to help its members and the broader film community recover.
