Munawar Faruqui, has found himself at the center of yet another controversy. His latest satirical show, ‘Hafta Vasooli,’ has sparked legal trouble, with allegations of promoting obscenity and hurting religious sentiments. A formal complaint has been filed against the show, demanding legal action and even a potential ban.
Advocate Amita Sachdeva has lodged an official complaint against ‘Hafta Vasooli,’ urging authorities to register an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 196, 299, and 353, along with provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act.The complaint claims that the show “disrespects multiple religions,” “goes against cultural values,” and is “corrupting the minds of young viewers.”

The controversy does not stop there. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has also raised objections to the show, calling for an immediate ban. The organization posted a statement on social media, saying, “We demand an immediate ban on #HaftaVasooli airing on Jio Hotstar! Munawar Faruqui uses inappropriate language in this show, which is unacceptable for public viewing. It degrades moral values. Streaming platforms must act responsibly!”
‘Hafta Vasooli’ debuted on February 14 and presents a newsroom-style satire focusing on political and cultural events. The first episode featured actors Sharib Hashmi and Vivian Dsena as guests, while the second episode welcomed Saqib Saleem. The show attempts to blend humor with sharp social commentary, a format that has both gained praise and invited criticism.
However, the backlash highlights the ongoing debate surrounding comedic freedom in India. While some argue that satire should have the liberty to push boundaries, others believe that there must be limits to content that could be perceived as offensive.
The controversy surrounding ‘Hafta Vasooli’ comes at a time when another comedy show, ‘India’s Got Latent,’ hosted by stand-up comedian Samay Raina, has also landed in legal trouble. The uproar began after guest Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, posed an inappropriate question to a contestant, sparking nationwide outrage.
The question led to a massive backlash, multiple FIRs against Allahbadia and even discussions in Parliament and the Supreme Court. The intense criticism forced Samay Raina to remove all episodes of ‘India’s Got Latent’ from YouTube.
These recent controversies highlight a larger debate within the Indian entertainment industry. While comedy and satire have traditionally thrived on pushing societal norms, the increasing legal scrutiny and social media backlash raise questions about the fine line between humor and offense.
For now, Munawar Faruqui has not made any public statements regarding the allegations against ‘Hafta Vasooli.’ Whether the show will face legal action or continue streaming remains to be seen. One thing is certain comedy in India is treading an increasingly delicate path, with every joke and punchline under heightened scrutiny.
