Anurag Kashyap is known for speaking his mind, and he did so again while criticizing Netflix’s hypocrisy in approving content for India. Expressing his frustration, he praised the film Adolescence, admitting it made him feel both jealous and envious.
Kashyap praised Adolescence, stating that Indian filmmakers aren’t allowed to be as bold. However, netizens accused him of hypocrisy for applauding a film on incel influence after previously praising Sandeep Reddy Vanga and his controversial film Animal.
A post on X (formerly Twitter) highlighted Anurag Kashyap’s past praise for Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, questioning his support for Adolescence, a film about incel influence. The screenshot was shared on Reddit, sparking discussions as netizens weighed in on the apparent contradiction.
A user wrote, ‘Anurag Kashyap will call KRK the next big thing if it suits him. Look at his history with KJo. What an irrelevant, opportunistic douchebag.’ Another one added, ‘I don’t think anyone questioned Vanga’s talent. The problem is what he endorses as a person. It’s okay to show problematic characters on screen – but when you go ahead and justify the characters in real life – that’s the real issue. So, I don’t care if he is the second coming when it comes to talent. He needs to be called out on his problematic values’.

On March 19, 2025, Anurag Kashyap praised Adolescence on Instagram, applauding the actors and makers for their outstanding work. He also criticized Netflix for not allowing Indian filmmakers to create such bold and remarkable projects.
A part of his note read, ‘I am numb and envious and jealous that someone can go and make that. The amount of hard work that has gone into the show. I can’t even imagine the rehearsals and prep they did so that they could shoot every episode in a single shot. It’s better than any film or anything I’ve seen. It takes its time, but it is courageous in not missing a single nuance. Definitely not possible to pull it off without a great team and determination to pull it off.’
In January 2024, Anurag Kashyap praised Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Instagram, sharing a series of pictures with him. He described Vanga as the most misunderstood, judged, and reviled filmmaker.
His note read, ‘”The most misunderstood, judged and reviled filmmaker at the moment. To me, he is the most honest, vulnerable and lovely person. I wanted to meet the man, and I had questions, and he answered everything I asked of him about his film that I actually saw twice. Thank you for being patient and being yourself. This is a person you can actually confront and talk to. Pls, talk to him about the problems you have with the film. 40 days since I first saw ANIMAL and 22 days since I saw it the second time. It has been the biggest game changer in Hindi cinema in a long time and a film whose impact (good or bad) can’t be denied. And the filmmaker who takes it all on his chin.’
