Prabhas’ Salaar Re-Release beats Tumbbad’s day 1 box office, but trails Harshvardhan Rane’s Sanam Teri Kasam

Prabhas’ Salaar: Part 1- Ceasefire was a massive hit when it originally released in December of 2023. Post it’s release on OTT- the film has gone on to become one of the most watched films across languages and this has led the makers to re-release the film in theaters on 21st March. And the response to the film has been strong. It has already beaten the numbers of Sohum Shah’s Tumbbad which for a while was the highest opener for a re-released film. As per Track BO, Salaar has already sold tickets worth Rs 1.72 crore in southern states while Tumbbad has collected Rs 1.6 crore.

Despite being available on streaming platforms, Salaar has managed to pull audiences back to theaters, a testament to Prabhas’ massive fan following and the film’s high-octane action sequences. The movie in advance sales has recorded a real occupancy of 33.55% and sold approximately 1,35,228 tickets on its re-release day, indicating strong audience interest.
However, Salaar still trails Sanam Teri Kasam, which remains the highest-opening re-release in India. The Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane starrer had an unexpected surge in popularity upon its re-release, earning a staggering Rs 4.25 crore on day one. The romantic drama’s cult fanbase, particularly among younger audiences, contributed to its massive re-release success.
While Salaar might not have overtaken Sanam Teri Kasam in re-release collections, its performance is still remarkable given its genre. The Prashanth Neel directorial which also featured Prithviraj Sukumran and Shruti Haasan, continues to resonate with action lovers. The re-release is expected to maintain steady footfalls over the weekend, further boosting its overall collections.
With the trend of re-releases gaining traction in India, Salaar’s strong start proves that audiences are willing to revisit blockbuster films in theaters. It will be interesting to see if Salaar can gain momentum and close the gap with Sanam Teri Kasam in the coming days.
