The star-studded 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards unfolded on Sunday night at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall, offering an insight into the forthcoming Oscars next month. Hosted by Kristen Bell, the evening is set to be a celebration of outstanding performances in film and television, with actors honouring their peers.

The red carpet was a spectacle of glamour and style, setting the tone for the night’s festivities. Selena Gomez captivated onlookers in an elegant off-the-shoulder black gown, while Jamie Lee Curtis turned heads adorned in feathers and sequins while Nicola Coughlan brought old Hollywood glam. Kaitlyn Dever opted for a sheer peach dress, and Sofia Carson stunned in a striking peony pink creation, complemented by nearly 100 carats of Chopard diamonds, including an 88.48-carat necklace. Millie Bobby Brown, Elle Fanning, and Fran Drescher also graced the event, each showcasing unique fashion statements.

The evening’s outcomes will provide clarity to an unpredictable awards season. Wicked leads the SAG Awards nominations with five nods, including Outstanding Cast, Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. The Jon M. Chu musical has yet to secure a major awards win, but the Screen Actors Guild often leans toward populist favourites.

Competing for Outstanding Cast alongside Wicked are Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave, and A Complete Unknown. Sean Baker’s Anora, after securing victories at the Producers Guild Awards, Directors Guild Awards, and the Independent Spirit Awards, is a strong contender for Best Picture. However, Edward Berger’s “Conclave,” which recently triumphed at the BAFTAs, added intrigue to the race.

Individual performances were also spotlighted. The Best Actor and Best Actress races promise to be intense. While Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) has dominated the season, Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) remain strong contenders for an upset. On the Best Actress front, Demi Moore (The Substance) and Mikey Madison (Anora) are in a tight battle for the win.

In the supporting categories, Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldana (Emilia Pérez) are considered frontrunners.

Beyond the competitive awards, Hollywood legend Jane Fonda will receive the prestigious SAG Life Achievement Award, honouring her storied career and lasting impact on the industry.

The television categories were equally competitive. Shōgun leads with five nominations and is a favourite to win Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Abbott Elementary continued its successful streak by securing Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series nom, while ‘The Bear’ will hope to cook up a storm once again this year.

A highlight of the evening is the SAG Life Achievement Award which will be bestowed on to the legendary Jane Fonda.
