Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava has turned out to be one of the biggest box office surprises of the year, delivering an exceptional run despite limited pre-release buzz. The period drama has amassed a staggering Rs 570.57 crore making it the fourth highest-grossing Hindi film With just Rs 11.74 crore more, Chhaava will surpass Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (Rs 582.31 crore) to claim the third spot among the biggest Hindi films ever.
A Remarkable Climb
When Chhaava released, industry trade experts had high expectations but did not foresee it climbing this high on the box office ladder. The film’s strong word of mouth, combined with Vicky Kaushal’s powerful performance and an engaging narrative, has propelled it to extraordinary numbers. Currently, it sits on the fourth position behind only Allu Arjun’s Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2 (Rs 812.14 crore), Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree 2 (Rs 597.99 crore) and Jawan in India net collections.
The Chase to Surpass Jawan
Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan set a massive benchmark in 2023 with Rs 582.31 crore in India net collections and Rs 640 crore across languages. However, Chhaava is now within striking distance of its Hindi collection, needing just Rs 11.74 crore more to overtake Jawan and become the third biggest Hindi film ever at the domestic box office. Given its steady performance, this milestone seems achievable in the coming days.
Beyond India: How Chhaava Stands Globally
While Chhaava has seen phenomenal success in India, its overseas collections are relatively lower at Rs 90.6 crore, bringing its worldwide total to Rs 787.5 crore. In comparison, Jawan grossed Rs 1160 crore worldwide, fueled by its strong international appeal. Despite this, Chhaava’s domestic dominance is a testament to its wide acceptance among Indian audiences.
Will It Cross the Line?
With momentum still on its side, Chhaava is expected to bridge the Rs 11.74 crore gap in the next few days. But the going for the film will be difficult from this point on as Mohanlal and Prithiviraj are coming with L2E Empuraan which has already become the biggest Malayalam film. It is looking as a Day 1 collection of at least Rs 20 crore in India and on the occasion of Eid, Salman Khan is coming up with his film Sikandar and the trade is very gung-ho about the expectations for the film. So as of now the ride for Vicky Kaushal starrer looks very rocky.
