Vicky Kaushal’s latest film, Chhaava, has taken the box office by storm, amassing an impressive $2,920,000 (approximately Rs 25 crore) in its first week in the North American market (the United States of America and Canada). Notably, the film’s collections on Day 6 and Day 7 stood at $211,000 and $149,500, respectively. This remarkable performance has positioned Chhaava as Vicky Kaushal’s highest-grossing film in the circuit to date.
Domestically, Chhaava has garnered Rs 242.25 crore within eight days of its release, closely trailing behind Kaushal’s previous blockbuster, Uri: The Surgical Strike, which collected Rs 244.14 crore. With just under Rs 2 crore needed to surpass Uri’s record, Chhaava is expected to achieve this milestone before the end of Saturday, solidifying its status as Kaushal’s most successful film in India.
The film’s exceptional box office trajectory can be attributed to its compelling portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, which has resonated deeply with audiences nationwide. Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava has received widespread acclaim for its storytelling, performances, and production quality. The film’s success is further amplified by its tax-free status in states like Madhya Pradesh and Goa, making it more accessible to a broader audience.
Chhaava also features stellar performances by Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai, and Viineet Kumar Singh as Kavi Kalash.
Trade expert taran Adarsh , in an exclusive conversation with ETimes, spoke about the film’s success, stating, “As an actor, whether it’s Masaan, Manmarziyaan, Bad Newz, or Sam Bahadur, Vicky has always delivered his best, irrespective of the film’s fate. You simply cannot say that he has ever given a bad performance. And now, with Chhaava, he has proven himself once again, portraying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj with great conviction.From a business perspective, if you look at his past films, he never had an opening in double digits except for Sanju and Dunki—where he had significant roles, but those were primarily Ranbir Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan films. But with Chhaava, he did it, and he did it with a bang. It opened with ₹30 crore-plus on Day 1. Yes, the Valentine’s Day celebrations aided it, but mind you, it wasn’t a quintessential Valentine’s release either.”
“Even on weekdays, the film has been averaging ₹20 crore per day. Many films don’t even get an opening like this. Of course, it’s not just Vicky, but the entire film—the emotion attached to the story and the subject matter, especially in Maharashtra—that have driven these big numbers. But since he is the lead actor, he is bound to benefit from its success. With Chhaava, he has taken a flight to superstardom. In our industry, you may be a fantastic actor or a terrible actor, but if you deliver numbers, that’s all that matters,” he added.
