After co-starring in Yash Chopra’s 1993 film Darr, Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol did not speak for 16 years. However, the success of Sunny’s recent blockbuster Gadar 2 brought them together, leading to a warm hug in front of the media. In conversation on Aap Ki Adalat, Sunny reflected on their past feud, acknowledging that time had helped them move on and recognize the ‘childishness’ of their differences.
Sunny Deol on Moving Past the Rift
Sunny Deol shared that with time, past conflicts fade, and one realizes they were unnecessary. He mentioned that he and Shah Rukh Khan have since met multiple times, discussed films, and moved past their differences. SRK even watched Gadar 2 with his family and personally called Sunny to congratulate him.
The Disagreement During Darr
During the filming of Darr, Sunny Deol was unhappy with how his character, a skilled Indian Navy officer, was portrayed. He believed the antagonist, played by Shah Rukh Khan, was being glorified at the expense of his role. He even had a heated discussion with director Yash Chopra, questioning how his character could be defeated so easily despite being an expert commando.
Sunny Deol was so frustrated during one of these discussions that he unknowingly tore his own pants in anger. This disagreement over his character’s portrayal led to a prolonged silence between him and Shah Rukh Khan, with the two not speaking to each other for 16 years after the film’s release.
SRK and Sunny Reconnect Over Gadar 2
Their relationship took a positive turn when Shah Rukh Khan reached out to congratulate Sunny Deol on the massive success of Gadar 2, even before watching the film. Sunny later revealed in an interview that he also spoke with SRK’s wife, Gauri, and son, Aryan. SRK further showed his support during an Ask SRK session on X, where he enthusiastically acknowledged watching and enjoying the film. The reconciliation became even more evident when SRK attended Gadar 2’s success celebration, sharing a warm hug with Sunny in front of the media.
While Gadar 2 set new records by earning a staggering ₹512.35 crore within 30 days of its release, SRK’s Jawan made history with the biggest opening in Hindi cinema, grossing ₹129.6 crore worldwide on its first day.
