Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao announced their divorce in 2021 after being together for 16 years. They continue to remain like family as they co-parent their son Azad and also continue to work together. In a recent interview, Aamir has opened up on his relationships with both his ex-wives. The actor said, “You know the important people I met in my life, like Reena – she and I were married when we were together for 16 years. It was a runaway marriage, humne bhaag ke shaadi ki this (We eloped to get married). The most important relationships that I had in my life were with these wonderful people. Both Reena and Kiran are amazing people. These two women are the ones I have spent my life with, and they have given me a lot.”
He further added how they continue to have a lot of love and respect for each other. He said, “We did go through a divorce, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have a lot of respect and love for each other. So maybe we have moved on in our relationship, but I have the highest regard for both Kiran and Reena and their families. In fact, I am close to mummy and daddy. Reena’s daddy died recently. I’m very close to their families.”
Earlier, in an interview with Faye D’souza, Kiran Rao had spoken about how they contineu to remain as family still, even though they are separated. She said, “We have a strong equation as co-parents, as family really, to survive the divorce. I’d be able to have individual time to myself with the comfort of knowing that Azad’s dad is also my friend, is also my family. It took me a while to get there mentally, emotionally. Even for Aamir to get there. We needed to be secure in the fact that we’re not going anywhere. We’re there for each other for the long term. It’s just that we don’t have to be married for that.”
