Sana Raees Khan, a prominent Mumbai-based criminal lawyer, gained significant recognition for her involvement in the high-profile 2021 drugs-on-cruise case, notably securing bail for Avin Sahu, a co-accused in the case. Sahu was among the first to be granted bail, with Sana arguing that neither he nor Aryan Khan, son of Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, possessed drugs at the time of their arrest by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Sana detailed her experience securing bail for Avin Sahu. She recounted the challenges she faced, stating, “The next day, I was in front of the same session spot where Aryan was rejected. I argued. I argued for the whole day, literally for four hours. I went on to argue and I got the bail.”
She highlighted a critical oversight in the investigation, pointing out that despite allegations of drug consumption, “They didn’t even take a blood test sample to even corroborate the allegations of consumption.”
Emphasizing the humanitarian aspect, Sana expressed concern over incarcerating young individuals without prior criminal records alongside hardened criminals. She argued, “Now all these boys, all these people, all these accused, they have no antecedents, they are not history cheaters, nor are they big gangsters. But now they are in jail. And who are around them? Gangsters, rapists, murderers, they will be with them in jail.”
Sana’s successful defense not only secured her client’s freedom but also set a precedent that influenced subsequent bail hearings, including that of Aryan Khan. Reflecting on the impact of her efforts, she noted, “And then the same people who were telling me to stop and rely on their bail order. Now I know I’m getting calls. Please give us your order. In the High Court, when Aryan Khan’s hearing was coming, I was getting calls that please we need that order copy.”
