Mithun Chakraborty has had a long and successful career in Bollywood and Bengali cinema. Even at the age of 74, he continues to impress audiences with his performances. However, his personal life has often been the subject of much discussion, especially his rumored relationship and secret marriage with the late actress Sridevi.
According to actress Sujata Mehta, in a past interview with the YouTube channel Hindi Rush, Sridevi and Mithun were deeply in love. She said, “Keh sakte hai ki breakup ne tod diya tha Sri ko. They were madly in love, I suppose. They got married, so na? Shaadi bhi hui thi. Aisa bolte hai.” ( One could say the breakup had broken Sri. They were madly in love, I suppose. They even got married, didn’t they? That’s what people say.”
Though neither Mithun nor Sridevi ever confirmed their marriage, rumors about their relationship surfaced in the late 1980s. At the time, Sridevi was focused on her film career, while Mithun was already married to Yogeeta Bali. Before marrying Yogeeta, Mithun had previously been married to Helena Luke. Mithun and Sridevi are said to have met on the sets of ‘Jaag Utha Insaan’ in the early 1980s. Their on-screen chemistry reportedly turned into a real-life romance, leading to their alleged secret marriage in 1985. They were said to have remained married until 1988. However, their relationship caused a major crisis in Mithun’s marriage with Yogeeta Bali.
Reportedly, Sridevi was heartbroken when she realized Mithun would not leave his wife for her. As a result, she decided to annul the marriage in 1988. Mithun stayed with Yogeeta, and later, in 1996, Sridevi found love again with film producer Boney Kapoor, whom she married. The couple had two daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor.
Despite the turmoil, Mithun and Yogeeta remained together, and their marriage survived the scandal. Reports suggest that Yogeeta was devastated upon discovering Mithun’s alleged affair and even attempted suicide. However, she later chose to stay with her husband. In an old interview with Telegraph, she said, “I will accept it even if he takes on a second wife.”
