Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik Chakraborty, and their family have been officially cleared by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. However, in 2020, Rhea and Showik were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with a drug-related case linked to Sushant’s death. Last year, Rhea spoke about her experience of spending 27 days in jail during a conversation with Humans of Bombay.
Experience in Jail
When asked about her experience in jail, Rhea described it as a completely different world, devoid of societal structures. She explained that there was an unusual sense of equality, as individuals were reduced to mere numbers rather than being recognized as people, particularly in under trial prisons. Based on her observations, she believed that a majority of the women, around 70-80%, were innocent, while the remaining 20% admitted to their actions, often justifying them as acts of self-defense or due to specific circumstances.
Justice System
Rhea pointed out that the justice system is slow, causing many undertrial prisoners to spend more time in jail than they would if convicted. She mentioned that some had been there for seven to ten years without a verdict. With no phones or contact with the outside world, many had lost family support, and some had even lost loved ones while in jail.
The actress further added, She said, “It’s a very sort of a strange world. It’s a very evolved crowd because it’s just human emotion and it’s basic rawest and it’s survival right? You have to survive each day. Each day feels like a year like it takes a long time for a day to finish because you’re literally doing nothing. My time in there was really difficult in the first two to kind of adjust to this situation because no one ever believes that they’re going to jail… There is a deep depression and a darkness that I obviously experienced.”
Investigation
Rhea and her family have now been cleared of all charges. Investigators found no evidence of foul play in Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic death at his Mumbai apartment in 2020, concluding it to be a case of suicide.
