Australia’s iconic cricket arena, the Gabba, will be demolished after the 2032 Olympic Games, according to a report published on Tuesday. It added that authorities will build a new 60,000-seater arena for cricket at a different venue, which will also be used for the Olympics.
Often called “the fortress, the Gabba has always been a stronghold for Australia. However, the fortress was breached in the 2020/21 Border Gavaskar Trophy as India, under skipper Ajinkya Rahane, pulled off a stunning win thanks to heroics from Rishabh Pant that helped India seal the series.
With the curtains set to come down on this venue, let us take a look at the top 5 records witnessed at this arena.
Highest innings total:
The highest score in a Test innings at the Gabba is the 655 all out Australia scored against England in 1946. Scored in the first innings, Australia won the match by an innings and 332 runs.
Australia also holds the record for the highest innings score in a One Day International when they notched up 324/7 in 2010 against the West Indies. Australia won that game too, by 50 runs, thanks to a ton by skipper Ricky Ponting (106 of 112).
It’s a clean sweep for Australia here as they have the highest total in T20 internationals too. They registered 209/3 in 2006 against South Africa and once again the result went their way. No wonder it’s a fortress for the Aussies!
Lowest innings total
India have the unfortunate distinction of scoring the lowest innings total in Test matches at the Gabba thanks to their 58 all out in 1947 against the hosts. Australia won that game by an innings and 226 runs.
Pakistan has the lowest ODI score at this venue with 71 all out in 1993.
South Africa hold the record for the lowest T20 international score at this venue, in response to Australia’s 209 mentioned above. The Proteas could only manage 114 before being bowled out in the 19th over.
