Baazigar, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Shilpa Shetty, was a massive success, earning Rs 32 crore on a Rs 4 crore budget. While most of its cast became Bollywood stars, Adi Irani, who played Vicky Malhotra, didn’t achieve the same level of fame.
In an interview with Filmytantra Media, Adi reflected on his struggles after Anari (1993) and Baazigar (1993). He shared that during that time, financial hardships made it difficult to afford even basic necessities. He often borrowed a friend’s scooter to travel around the city in search of work.
The actor further shared that on days he couldn’t afford petrol, he walked to the bus stop. When people questioned why he was there, he would pretend to be waiting for a friend. To avoid further questions, he would quietly make his way back home.
He also recalled not having a phone at home, relying on a nearby PCO booth to take messages for him. He paid Rs 1 per message and another rupee to call back. He also accepted many uncredited extra roles just to earn a living.
Adi shared that his sister, Aruna Irani, was aware of his struggles and often offered help, but he refused. He believed it was his own battle to fight and didn’t want to depend on her, as she had her own family to take care of.
He credited his wife for helping him through difficult times, saying he wouldn’t have recovered without her support. He admired her strength and felt guilty at times for the hardships she faced due to their love marriage, but her unwavering support kept him going.
