‘Lagaan’ remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic films, and the 2001 movie became India’s official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Helmed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan featured Aamir Khan as the determined protagonist Bhuvan, alongside Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, and Hollywood actor Paul Blackthorne. There was a time when Aamir shared his dilemma about having a moustache for the movie.
In an old behind-the-scenes video shared by the makers of Lagaan, an unexpected challenge Aamir faced on set with his moustache was highlighted. The video showcased Aamir experimenting with different styles of trimmed moustaches to ensure the best look for his character.

In the footage, Aamir is seen standing in front of a mirror, carefully shaving while keeping his moustache intact. “I am going to show it to Ashu (Ashutosh Gowariker) and then come back here and remove this,” he says.
Director Ashutosh Gowariker highlighted Aamir’s meticulous approach to his roles in the same video: “Aamir was seriously worried about his moustache, or rather his lack of one.” The concern stemmed from the fact that village boys of that era were mostly clean-shaven, and he wanted to maintain the character’s authenticity.
Aamir discussed how a man during that time, facing real problems, could still shave his moustache. He also spoke about the water scarcity at that time and how he came up with different thin and thick styles of moustaches to get Ashutosh’s approval. “Ek toh baarish nahin hai, khaane ke vaande hain, aur ye shave kar raha hai,” he quipped.
Gowariker further shared how Aamir persistently tried different moustache styles, seeking the perfect fit for Bhuvan. However, after multiple attempts, the director ultimately decided that the clean-shaven look was the best choice for the character.
Aamir Khan turned 60 on March 14 this year, and the actor is all set for the release of his next movie, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par‘, later this year.
